11+

Welcome to our 11+ information section for Year 5 families.

At Skegness Grammar School, we understand that the 11+ process can feel unfamiliar, and sometimes a little daunting, for both children and parents. The purpose of this section is to provide clear, practical information about the admissions process, the tests themselves, and the steps families need to take if they are considering a grammar school place for Year 7.

The 11+ is an entrance assessment taken by pupils who wish to be considered for a place at a selective grammar school. In Lincolnshire, the assessment currently focuses on verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. These tests are designed to look at how children think, spot patterns, work with language, solve problems and apply logic. They are not the same as SATs and should not be approached as a test of everything a child has learned at primary school.

Our aim is to help families approach the process calmly and confidently. Preparation should be steady, sensible and balanced. Familiarisation with the question types can be very helpful, but excessive coaching or pressure is not necessary and may be counterproductive. Children are likely to feel more confident when they understand what to expect, have had a chance to practise the style of questions, and are supported at home in a positive and reassuring way.

This section includes guidance on registration, key stages in the admissions timeline, practice and familiarisation materials, and advice on how to support your child’s wellbeing throughout the process. Specific dates and deadlines can change from year to year, so families should always check the school website and the Local Authority admissions information for the most up-to-date details.

If you are considering entering your child for the 11+, we encourage you to read through the information carefully, attend any familiarisation opportunities available, and contact the school if you need further guidance.

For admissions enquiries, please contact the school office or ask to speak to our admissions specialist Miss Clarke: (dclarke1@skegnessgrammar.co.uk)

 Practice papers & answers

For free 11+ preparation materials, we recommend families start with the official GL Assessment familiarisation materials and the Lincolnshire Grammar Schools Consortium information. These are the most relevant sources for understanding the style of verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning used in the Lincolnshire 11+. Families may also find third-party free practice papers useful, but these should be used for steady familiarisation rather than intensive coaching.
